They consist of acts that have spiritual meanings and must be performed by the authority of the Priesthood and confirmed by the Holy Ghost in order to be effective. Ordinances can also refer to laws and judgments revealed by God.

Mormonism teaches that there are five ordinances necessary for exaltation:

* Baptism by Immersion (see Matt. 3: 16; D&C 20: 72-74)
* Bestowal of the Gift of the Holy Ghost (see D&C 20: 68; 33: 15)
* Ordination to the Priesthood (for men, see D&C 84: 6-16; 107: 41-52)
* Temple Endowment (see D&C 124: 39),
* Marriage Sealed in the Temple (see D&C 132: 19-20)

In addition to these ordinances, there are others that are practiced by Mormons. The major ones include:
*The Sacrament (see D&C 20: 77, 79)
*Administration to the sick (see James 5: 14-15)
*Blessing of children (see D&C 20: 70)
*Dedication of graves

Each of these ordinances must be done under certain conditions in order to be acceptable before God.
* Ordinances must be done by the proper priesthood authority.
* Each ordinance must come at the proper stages of the person's life. Baptism for instance, is performed only after a person has turned eight years old. Young men are ordained to the various offices of the Aaronic Priesthood starting at age 12 and to the Melchizedek Priesthood starting at age 18 or 19.
* The endowment and marriage ceremonies are done only in dedicated temples of the Lord.
* For all ordinances, the person must be willing and worthy to receive the blessings and responsibilities associated with the particular ordinance.

In order to maintain the blessings of each ordinance, a person must continually abide by the promises they made and keep themselves worthy before God. Since the creation of the earth, God’s children have always been expected to participate in sacred ordinances. Ezekiel 11:20 states, "walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances." The Mormon Church continues doing this and firmly proclaims that ordinances are essential to salvation, “All mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel (see Article of Faith number 3).

Ordinances are important because through them an individual can become better acquainted with God. Doctrine and Covenants section 84 says,
:And this greater priesthood administereth the gospel and holdeth the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God. Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest. And without the ordinances thereof, and the authority of the priesthood, the power of godliness is not manifest unto men in the flesh.
Participating in ordinances allows us to better understand the order in God’s kingdom. We also better understand the Atonement, forgiveness, and the plan of salvation by participating worthily in ordinances.

Additionally, all of these ordinances can be done in behalf of the dead in Mormon temples so that all may be partakers of God's love. Names of deceased persons come from the Church's Family History program.

Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=First_Principles_of_the_Gospel&diff=15929 First Principles of the Gospel 2008-03-25T03:32:45Z
Dumbcomputer: Added links

The Articles of Faith are a simple but effective compilation of many basic beliefs of Mormonism.

The 4th Article of Faith states that “We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Joseph Smith).

Faith in God
The first principle of the Gospel is faith. Faith, as defined by the restored gospel, is faith in God the Father and in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Faith in God is more than a vague belief in Him. To have faith in God means to trust Him, to have confidence in Him, and to be willing to act in life according to a solid belief in Him.

Faith is awakened when people hear or read the word of God. In the Book of Mormon we read that to have faith is to “hope for things which are not seen, which are true” (Alma 32:21). Similarly, in the Bible, Paul explained, "Now faith is the substance [meaning the assurance] of things hoped for, the evidence [meaning the demonstration or proof] of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). Men and women must live by faith, because divine realities are veiled from our physical senses.

It has been said that faith is truly a principle of action and power. True faith is not only a belief, but includes good actions. To have faith doesn’t mean only to accept mentally a certain belief of principle, but requires its implementation.

Jesus said, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 7:21).

Righteous behavior increases faith, while sin and wickedness diminish it. Not keeping the commandments of God brings not only a loss of the Spirit of God, but also a loss of faith. This fact leads to the second principle of the Gospel—repentance.

Repentance
God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ have given us a plan of happiness. Sin, or any sort of iniquity, makes people unhappy because, as is taught by the Book of Mormon “wickedness never was happiness” (Alma 41:10). Thanks to the Atonement of Jesus Christ, Heavenly Father has provided a way for men to repent and be forgiven.

A modern Mormon Prophet said that repentance is "to change one's mind in regard to past or intended actions or conduct" (McKay, p. 14). In the Bible the Apostle Paul observes that "all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23), and for this reason, the Lord Jesus Christ "gave commandment that all men must repent" (2 Nephi 2:21). The implication of these scriptures is that repentance is necessary for every soul who has not yet reached perfection (and this includes any person who ever lived in this earth with the exception of Jesus Christ).

Usually in the Mormon Church we teach that in order to properly repent we need:

• To confess our sins to God, and if necessary, to the proper Church authority.

• To feel a sincere sorrow for our sins.

• To ask God to forgive us.

• To do all we can to correct the problems our actions may have caused (make restitution).

• To turn away from our sins and not repeat them.

Thanks to the Atonement of Christ, sincere repentance brings forgiveness and greater peace in this life, and it prepares us to live with Heavenly Father in the life to come.

Baptism
After awakening faith in Christ in the hearts of his listeners on the day of Pentecost, Peter exhorted them to "repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the Holy Ghost" (Acts 2:38). So, even though repentance is necessary and truly indispensable to eternal salvation and to earthly happiness, it is not sufficient by itself to allow men to return to live with Heavenly Father in His Celestial Kingdom.

Only after repenting and abandoning former sinful deeds and thought is one prepared to be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost, and have all his previous sins remitted. These first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are strictly related to each other. A complete rebirth requires first, faith in Jesus Christ; second, repentance, which is a consequence of the realization of our unworthiness when we approach the Lord Jesus Christ in faith; third, baptism; and fourth, the reception of the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Jesus Christ and all true prophets in all the ages of the world taught that we must be baptized by complete immersion in water. When Jesus was living on this earth He set the example by being baptized to “fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15). Mormons believe that baptism must be performed by one who has the proper priesthood authority. To perform this ordinance properly, the priesthood-holder raises his right hand, recites a prescribed baptismal prayer, and then completely immerses the candidate in the water (3 Nephi 11:23-26). Baptism is a symbol of the covenant by which people promise to follow Jesus Christ and enter into the fold of God. Men are not only baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38), but also to become members of the Church of Jesus Christ. If one is truly repentant when he enters the waters of baptism, he is forgiven of his sins and cleansed at that moment. Baptism is a symbol of the death and resurrection of the Savior. Thus, the newly baptized person becomes "born again."

The Gift of the Holy Ghost
The laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost is one of the basic principles and ordinances of the gospel, and it is integrally linked to faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, and baptism by immersion for the remission of sins. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, after the baptism by water, comes the "the baptism by fire," or Gift of the Holy Ghost, an indispensable step in the process of spiritual purification. The Savior told Nicodemus, "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (John 3:5).

Many people have felt the presence or promptings of the Holy Ghost at some time during their lives. However, there is an important difference between experiencing the occasional influence of the Holy Ghost and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost after baptism.

The Holy Ghost can temporarily influence people, comforting them, or even revealing truth to them, but the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost is reserved for those who have been baptized into the true Church of Jesus Christ by someone who has the proper priesthood authority. The gift of the Holy Ghost is a privilege that continues with the baptized member, if he continues keeping the commandments of God. The Holy Ghost cannot dwell in an unclean place, and will depart, if a person renders himself unclean through sin.

In Mormonism, the gift of the Holy Ghost is bestowed by the laying on of hands, as explained in the New Testament (Acts 8:17-18), within a few days after the baptism by water. A bearer of the proper priesthood authority lays his hands upon the head of the newly baptized member, and after calling the person by name, he confirms the person as a member of the Church, and says, "Receive the Holy Ghost." These first basic steps are often followed by a Priesthood blessing, which offers counsel and direction to the newly baptized member. This blessing is received and given through the spirit of revelation. Thus, it is specifically tailored to the needs of the one receiving it.
Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Forgiven&diff=15928 Forgiven 2008-03-25T03:32:33Z
Dumbcomputer: Created page to redirect

#redirect forgiveness
Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Repentance&diff=15927 Repentance 2008-03-25T03:24:13Z
Dumbcomputer: Added links

One of the foundational principles of the Mormon Church is repentance. This principle is encapsulated as part of the fourth Article of Faith:

:We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, repentance; third, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Mormons believe in the principle of repentance, which is founded only upon true faith in Christ as Savior and Redeemer of the world. Repentance is key to living a Christ-like life; it is an ongoing process through which the individual can make his life more like Christ's. Repentance is not necessarily a simple matter, as it involves voluntarily changing our nature. Through repentance we deny our worldly selves and aspire to the divine.

Part of the human condition is our tendency to sin. We overcome sin through repentance, which includes a recognition of the sin, sincere regret (or godly sorrow), restitution if at all possible, and abstinence from the sin in the future. Key to the repentance process is a person's personal, sincere, prayerful confession to God, which includes asking for forgiveness and resolving not to repeat the sin. The LDS Guide to the Scriptures defines repentance as:
:A change of mind and heart that brings a fresh attitude toward God, oneself, and life in general. Repentance implies that a person turns away from evil and turns his heart and will to God, submitting to God's commandments and desires and forsaking sin. True repentance comes from a love for God and a sincere desire to obey his commandments. All accountable persons have sinned and must repent in order to progress toward salvation. Only through the atonement of Jesus Christ can our repentance become effective and accepted by God.
Less serious sins can be dealt with personally, between the individual and God. It is important for Church members to confess serious sins to a bishop, who can offer advice, encouragement, and assistance with the repentance process.

Consistent with the meaning of the Hebrew and Greek words from which it is translated, repentance denotes "a change of mind," "a turning of the heart and will to God, and a renunciation of sin to which we are naturally inclined." Thus, a return to sin shows that the repentance process is not truly completed.

----
<references />

Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Sins&diff=15926 Sins 2008-03-25T03:23:50Z
Dumbcomputer: Created page to redirect

#redirect sin
Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:Forgiveness&diff=15925 Talk:Forgiveness 2008-03-25T03:12:38Z
Dumbcomputer:

Whew. Glad I didn't have to write this myself. You've done a great service with this effort. Very thorough, minor edits. I did remove the reference to Judas. We just don't know how much knowledge he had, and Jesus said it would have been better for Judas if he had never been born. It's possible he committed the sin against the Holy Ghost, though it doesn't say it specifically in the scriptures. Also added Cain. The scriptures do call him a son of perdition. He sinned against knowledge. Again, thanks.Gboyd 17:44, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

The edits look good, I have no problem with them. I guess the Judas part was appropriate. As far as Cain being a son of perdition, I know that he was given a name of sorts that was perdition, but it does not explicitly state that he was a son of perdition. I am sure that Brigham Young said something about it though. :) Oh well, it doesn't really matter to me. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught, "The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 121).

Lectures on Faith teach that faith is a principle of action and of power, in both the temporal and the spiritual realm. Ultimately, faith is "the first great governing principle which has power, dominion, and authority over all things" (Lecture 1). For Mormons, the historical basis of faith comes from scripture, which is a record of God's dealings with man throughout the ages.

The Lectures on Faith explain:

:Let us here observe, that three things are necessary in order that any rational and intelligent being may exercise faith in God unto life and salvation:
:First, the idea that he actually exists.
:Secondly, a correct idea of his character, perfections, and attributes.
:Thirdly, an actual knowledge that the course of life which he is pursuing is according to his will. For without an acquaintance with these three important facts, the faith of every rational being must be imperfect and unproductive; but with this understanding it can become perfect and fruitful, abounding in righteousness, unto the praise and glory of God the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Lecture 3)

The character and attributes and perfections of Christ are Knowledge, Faith (or Power), Justice, Judgment, Mercy, and Truth. By the operation of the Holy Ghost, the miracle of the Atonement, and personal sacrifice, we can develop the same character and attributes of God.

Faith in Jesus Christ means accepting Him as the Son of God and the Messiah. This includes two parts: 1) the belief that all who live on Earth are granted salvation from death (physical resurrection) through the Atonement and 2) that salvation from sin (or spiritual death) is obtained through sincere repentance, resulting in forgiveness for sin through His grace, and by following the teachings and commandments of Jesus Christ. Mormons are encouraged to develop their faith through study, prayer, service, and obedience to God's commandments. Faith is a form of spiritual work and character-shaping, in conjunction with the miracle of Christ's Atonement.

Mormons often refer to their personal faith as their "testimony" and refer to telling others about their faith as "bearing testimony."
Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Plan_of_Salvation&diff=15890 Plan of Salvation 2008-03-24T17:09:29Z
Dumbcomputer: Added links to forgiveness

Adapted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Plan of Salvation, also known as the plan of happiness, plan of mercy and plan of redemption, is a fundamental teaching in Mormon doctrine. The plan of salvation represents the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ as it is experienced and lived by mankind. It's purpose, according to the Lord is "to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" (Moses 1:39). It includes the Creation, the Fall, and the Atonement, along with all God-given laws, ordinances, and doctrines. After this life is the Resurrection, and Judgment.

Mormons believe that "through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel." (See Third Article of Faith.) Mankind may thus return to live with God as glorified, eternal beings. However, the conditions that Christ requires individuals to fulfill do not of themselves merit salvation, but are required for other reasons. It is only through His merits, mercy, and grace that salvation comes.

The gift of immortality is freely given to all because of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross and his subsequent Resurrection (See 1 Corinthians 15:22), although salvation from sin, or spiritual death, is conditional. Entrance to the highest Heavenly Kingdom, the "Celestial Kingdom" (See 1 Corinthians 15:40), is only granted to those who accept Jesus through baptism into the Church by its priesthood authority, follow Church doctrine, and live righteous lives. Faith alone, or faith without works, (i.e. dead faith), is not considered sufficient to attain exaltation. (See James 2:26.)

Exaltation is the reward which Mormons believe is a gift given to the righteous who have endured faithfully, trusting in Jesus Christ and repenting of their sins. This includes those whose first opportunity to hear the gospel is in the afterlife (see baptism for the dead). Through the process of exaltation, a person can eventually become like Jesus Christ, or as it is expressed in scripture, a joint-heir with Him (See Romans 8:17.)

For More Information visit The Plan of Salvation explained with illustration and scriptures, The Plan of Salvation on MeetMormonMissionaries.org

The Steps of the Plan of Salvation
*Pre-mortal Existence
:Before a person is born into the mortal world (earth-life) he lived with Heavenly Father. All people are His children. They learned, formed relationships, and developed talents in the pre-mortal existence. However, they could only progress so far, so Heavenly Father presented them with a way to become more like Him.
*Birth
:Those who chose to follow Heavenly Father’s plan in the pre-mortal life have been or will be born. Birth is the way they gain physical bodies, and is an important step in the plan of salvation.
*Mortality
:This time on earth is like a test. Everyone needs to learn how to have faith in God and follow His commandments. People are also learning how to live in and lead families.
*Creation and Fall
:According to Mormonism these were necessary steps. The Fall is actually a positive event that provides the necessary mortal experience which is needed to become like God.
*Death
:Like birth, death is a doorway into a new life. Through death people again enter the Spirit world.
*Spirit World
:In the spirit world there will be two conditions of existence, spirit prison; for those who did not have the opportunity to learn the gospel of Christ or who rejected it, and spirit paradise, for the righteous. Those in spirit prison will have the opportunity to learn about and accept the gospel.

:The term "spirit prison" does not have the same connotation as a "prison" on earth, but only means that a spirit in that condition cannot advance in light, knowledge and preparation for eternity until he receives the covenants of the gospel of Christ. Those who performed good works and did not commit major sins while living by the light and knowledge that they had, will rest from care and sorrow but will still need to progress, hence their condition can be described as a spirit prison, but it is a good place. The wicked, however, will suffer in spirit prison, though they will still have an opportunity to hear the plan of repentance, forgiveness, and salvation through Jesus Christ.
*Resurrection
:This is the reuniting of the body and spirit. Every person who has ever lived will be resurrected.
*Judgment
:After resurrection, men are brought before the judgment bar of Christ. All will be judged for their actions during mortality. Each person will be put into one of four places based on his actions: the Celestial (highest) kingdom, Terrestrial kingdom, Telestial kingdom, Outer Darkness (equivalent of Hell, only a few will be sent here).

Kingdoms of Glory
For Church members, the kingdoms of glory, as follows, are congruent with Christ's words in the New Testament: "In my house there are many mansions..."

The Celestial Kingdom (whose glory is compared to the brightness of the sun in the sky, as its inhabitants have all truth and light) is where the righteous will live with God and with their families. Those who have had the ordinance of eternal marriage, which is performed in temples, and baptism may be exalted if they are found worthy by God. Accountable individuals must be repent and be baptized to gain entrance to the Celestial Kingdom. Mormonism teaches that all children who die before the age of accountability (age eight for people of sound mind) automatically inherit a celestial glory.

Those good people who are not valiant in following Jesus or who do not accept the Gospel do not qualify for exaltation and will be consigned to the Terrestrial Kingdom (whose glory is compared to the brightness of the moon in the sky). This kingdom is one of great glory, but without the presence of God the Father. An ultimate willingness to keep the "law of carnal commandments" (the Ten Commandments) is considered essential to enter this kingdom.

Murderers, other criminals, and the like who do not accept the Atonement of Jesus Christ will eventually spend eternity with people of like intent in the Telestial Kingdom, and their glory will be as that of the stars in the night sky. This is also considered a kingdom of glory and has been described as being better than our current earthly life. All those who do not qualify for a higher degree of glory will automatically enter this kingdom unless they deny the Holy Ghost, a sin it is believed very few people are able to commit. However, those who inherit this kingdom will still have to suffer for a time because of their sins and they will have to pay the penalty for their disobedience in life.

Those few people who do deny the Holy Ghost, after gaining a literal witness that Jesus is the Christ and a full knowledge of the Gospel, willfully deny and contend against the Holy Ghost, are believed to inherit no glory. Most members of the Church refer to this place as Outer Darkness; this is not to be confused with traditional Christianity's definition of the term. Individuals so banished are called Sons of Perdition. forgiveness is not possible for these souls, though they will be resurrected. Cain is an example of a son of perdition. He walked and talked with God, then used his agency to serve Satan.

Enduring to the End
Latter-day Saints believe that life involves enduring to the end, and is not just a "one-time" religious experience. A life of discipleship is daily spiritual maintenance, charitable works, and personal development — social, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual development. It also involves overcoming personal trials, attending church and the temple, rearing families, and doing work for the dead. Ultimately, the goal is sanctification, the process of having the same character that God has: perfect love, perfect mercy, and perfect truth.

External Links
Plan of Salvation explained with illustration and scriptures
Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Proclamation_to_the_World&diff=15889 Proclamation to the World 2008-03-24T17:05:25Z
Dumbcomputer: Added links

The Family: A Proclamation to The World was issued by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on September 23, 1995. Since the organization of the Mormon Church in 1830, the Church has only issued five proclamations. The fact that the Church would issue a proclamation on the family shows how important the subject is.

Elder Henry B. Eyring stated—
:[B]ecause our Father loves his children, he will not leave us to guess about what matters most in this life concerning where our attention could bring happiness or our indifference could bring sadness. Sometimes he will tell a person such things directly, by inspiration. But he will, in addition, tell us these important matters through his servants. In the words of the prophet Amos, recorded long ago, "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets" (Amos 3:7). He does this so that even those who cannot feel inspiration can know, if they will only listen, that they have been told the truth and have been warned.
The proclamation on the family is a warning from God to the entire world that we cannot let this basic unit fall apart, and that focusing on our families will bring happiness.

The Family: A Proclamation to the World
The First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children.

All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.

In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.

The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God's commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.

We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God's eternal plan.

Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "Children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.

We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.

We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.

This proclamation was read by President Gordon B. Kimball while he was an apostle dealing with helping sinners repent; particularly serious sinners. It grew out of Elder Kimball years spent dealing with counseling individuals as a local leader down in Arizona and as an apostle. At that time people frequently brought there problems to church authorities in Salt Lake City for counsel. Since then, due to growth of the church, it has become impracticable for this practice to continue and Members are repeatedly urged to go to there local leaders for counsel. However, Elder Kimball in his early days as an apostle counseled many members.

The beginning of the book tells about all of us sinning and how even so-called minor sins have serious consequences. Elder Kimball discusses how to chart safe courses and counsels to avoid sin in many things. He also says negative things about those who don't forgive and positive things about those that do forgive.

The book is known for its bluntness in its treatment of sins such as homosexuality and adultery. However the book is also a message hope and while emphasizing that it's better not to sin, it also declares that there is hope for the sinner.

Many people avoid reading much of it due to its harsh tones. In the LDS comedy, The RM, the main character, Jared, is given a copy of The Miracle of Forgiveness when arrested for driving a stolen car he didn't realize was stolen.

The Miracle of Forgiveness is sold in many languages and still in print to help sinners on the path to repentance.

Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Forgive&diff=15885 Forgive 2008-03-24T16:47:44Z
Dumbcomputer: Created page to redirect

#redirect forgiveness
Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Parable&diff=15884 Parable 2008-03-24T16:42:10Z
Dumbcomputer: updated link to Jacob 5

A story that teaches a lesson, or principle. Dumbcomputer 00:49, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Excellent job. I added a link to Jacob 5 at lds.org, and one apostrophe. I can't figure out why your un-capitalized word, millennium, linked with an article. Perhaps it's the browser. At work I use Mozilla Firefox, and at home I use internet explorer. Rickety 03:30, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes, and that's the problem! I'm making a choice between searching out the original article I want to link to, or trying -- Pre-Mortal Life, Pre-mortal Life, Pre-Mortal life, Pre-mortal life -- until I get it right. Only the first one works, by the way. Another problem is that MormonWiki alphabetizes in the articles list giving priority to caps. If you look on the "m" page under Mormon, you'll see that there's one alphabetical list and then another, the first with titles with two capitalized words, and the second with only a first word capitalized. When man receives forgiveness from God, it is made possible only through the atonement of Jesus Christ.

The Doctrine Forgiveness From God
The need for forgiveness from God comes from offending God through sin, or acting contrary to the will of God. All are in need of forgiveness, since all have sinned. (Ecclesiastes 7:20, Romans 3:23). Forgiveness comes as a result of repentance (D&C 58:42) and is only possible because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. (Mosiah 4:2, D&C 60: 7)

Receiving Forgiveness From God
Perhaps the first necessary element in receiving forgiveness from God is repentance. (D&C 138:19) In addition to or in conjunction with repentance, other things seem to be important to receiving forgiveness from our sins. These include acknowledgment of our sin, (Psalms 32: 5) a willingness to worship God over anything else, (Josh. 24: 19) prayer (1 Nephi 7:21, Enos 1: 5), and forgiving those who have offended us. (Luke 6:37, D&C 82: 1)

It is interesting to note that while acknowledging sin, and prayer are closely intertwined with the doctrine of repentance, the principle of forgiving others in order to obtain forgiveness is unique to forgiveness. Forgiving others of their sins or trespasses against us is considered below.

Many examples of forgiveness can be found throughout the scriptures including Adam, Moses, Paul, Alma, Joseph Smith and many others. Another example that may be useful to consider is Enos, a brief writer in the Book of Mormon.

Enos, the son of the prophet Jacob and the nephew of Nephi, had gone into the mountains to hunt, and while hunting he began to ponder the teachings of his father regarding happiness and eternal life. As he pondered he began to feel a need to pray to God, which he did. Enos eventually receives confirmation from God that his sins have been forgiven, but not before he undergoes what he calls a "wrestle" with God "after praying all the day long". For Enos forgiveness was something that he had to truly desire and work for in addition to whatever steps he had surely taken earlier to repent.

The Effects of Forgiveness From God
When one obtains forgiveness from God, the forgiveness is complete and total. It is so total that it is likened unto God "forgetting" our sins. (Hebrews 8:12, D&C 58:42) It is also compared to taking something that is stained scarlet red, and cleansing the stain so completely as to be pure white, like snow. (Isaiah 1:18)

Forgiveness From Man
As mentioned above, one requirement for forgiveness that is separate from the requirements of repentance is to forgive others. In regards to forgiving others the scriptures teach mankind to forgive those who truly repent of the things that they have done, (Mosiah 26:29), regardless of who they are (D&C 64:10) or how many times they have offended. (Matthew 18:21, D&C 98: 40Moroni 6:8)

A failure to forgive others impacts an individuals capacity to receive forgiveness. The Savior taught very clearly that if an individual is unwilling to forgive other people, that individual will not be forgiven. (Matthew 6:15 3 Nephi 13:14)

The Savior taught a valuable parable regarding the principle behind forgiving others. He told of a king who found that one of his servants owed him a vast sum of money, and he prepared to have all of the servants belongings sold or impounded to help pay the debt. The servant begged the king for more time, and the king, having compassion, forgave the servant of the entire debt.

This same servant left the king and eventually found someone who owed him money, although it was a minor sum. In much the same manner as the original servant begged for mercy, this lessor debtor also begged for mercy. Unfortunately the plea fell on deaf ears, and the original servant cast the lessor debtor who owed him the small sum into prison. This information made its way to the king, who became very angry with the servant. The king felt that if he was willing to forgive a vast sum of money, the servant should be willing to forgive a lessor sum of money. The king then revoked his compassion and forgiveness and gave the servant over to the "tormentors" until everything was paid.

The Savior finishes the parable by clearly telling his disciples "So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses." (Matthew 18:35)

Not Eligible for Forgiveness
There are some unfortunate cases wherein individuals have committed sins that are ineligible for forgiveness. These "unforgivable sins" are understood to be denying the Holy Ghost (Mark 3:29) and murder.

Denial of the Holy Ghost
Denying the Holy Ghost requires more than a typical hardening of the heart to Holy Ghost and the testimony that comes through faith alone. In order to sin against the Holy Ghost the Prophet Joseph Smith taught that a person "must receive the Holy Ghost, have the heavens opened unto him, and know God, and then sin against Him. After a man has sinned against the Holy Ghost, there is no repentance for him. He has got to deny Jesus Christ when the heavens have been opened to him, and to deny the Plan of Salvation with his eyes open to the truth of it." When this statement is compared to Paul's description of the unpardonable sin in Hebrews 6:4-6 and D&C 76:35, one can get a sense of the extensive knowledge required to deny the Holy Ghost. It requires a special knowledge, beyond faith, that the Savior is real, that he is the Son of God, etc. By rejecting him after having this sure knowledge it is as if we would actually crucify the Savior again, which would be to shed the most innocent of blood after having the most explicit knowledge</ref>This is where those who sin against the Holy Ghost differ from the Roman Soldiers, and even Judas, who crucified the Savior. Their knowledge of his divinity was based on faith, the knowledge required to deny the Holy Ghost appears to be an actual knowledge</ref> of the reality and divinity of the Savior. The nature of the extensive knowledge required to deny the testimony of the Holy Ghost is such that few obtain such a testimony in their probationary state.

Murder
Murder, or the unlawful taking of an innocent life, is second only to the denial of the Holy Ghost in terms of sins that are unforgivable. It appears to be second to the aforementioned sin because of a slight difference in scriptures regarding the consequence of murder.

It is clear that an individual who murders after having entered into the New and Everlasting Covenant will fail to have their name written in the Lamb's Book of Life. (D&C 132:13) However, Alma 39: 6 relates that for those who murder it is "... not easy for him to obtain forgiveness." (emphasis added) Alma's characterization that it is "not easy" for someone to obtain forgiveness is slightly different from many of the other scriptures regarding the consequence of murder, suggesting that perhaps there are some rare instances where murder may be forgiven. It is clear, however, that those who have entered into sacred covenants, and violate them by unlawfully taking an innocent life, will be unable to receive a forgiveness of the murder from God.

Other Resources on Forgiveness
Mormon Resources on Forgiveness

Scriptures for Forgiveness

A Mormon Guide to Forgiveness

----
<references/>
Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:War_in_Heaven&diff=15870 Talk:War in Heaven 2008-03-24T00:29:26Z
Dumbcomputer:

DumbComputer -- Thanks for this. The subject of the chapter is a story that the Nephite prophet Jacob relates, originally taught by Zenos (an Old Testament prophet mentioned only in the Book of Mormon). The story involves a vineyard wherein some of the olive trees are productive, and others are not. The master of the vineyard (Christ) works hard to help all the trees to be productive so that he will not have to cut them down and throw them into the fire.

Allegories and Parables
An allegory is defined as "The representation of abstract ideas or principles by characters, figures, or events in narrative, dramatic, or pictorial form." The term allegory is never mentioned in the Book of Mormon. However, the nature of the story told by Zenos is clearly an allegory, as it is designed to teach the abstract idea of the history and destiny of Israel. While it is not incorrect to refer to Zenos' story as a parable or "a simple story illustrating a moral or religious lesson," an allegory may be more accurate.

Elements of Zenos' Allegory
The following are suggested symbols and their meanings contained in Jacob 5. However, a short summary of the story may be instructive in understanding the story.

The First Visit
The master of the vineyard goes into the vineyard to find that his olive tree is decaying. He attempts to help the tree by pruning and fertilizing the tree, which creates some young healthy branches, but fails to fix the tree entirely, creating a worry that the tree will die.

The master of the vineyard creates a plan to salvage the tree by grafting in branches from wild olive trees in other parts of the vineyard. He instructs his servants to cut out the decayed branches and burn them in the fire, and to graft in branches from the wild olive trees in their place. He also cuts the young healthy branches and grafts them into wild olive trees in other parts of the vineyard.

The first visit is thought to represent the state of ancient Israel before the time of Christ. Israel was in a state of apostasy which ended up resulting in Israel being scattered by the Assyrians and the Babylonians. Those portions of Israel that are lost or scattered are represented by the young branches that the Lord hides in other parts of the vineyard.

The Second Visit
After a long time passes away the Lord of the vineyard tells his servants that they are going to labor in the vineyard. When they get to the vineyard they find that the original tree has been very productive. They then go to the other parts of the vineyard where the master had placed the young shoots from the original tree.

The master had placed the branches in three separate places, some in bad ground, some in worse ground, and some in good ground. The two sets of branches in the bad ground have also been productive, similar to their parent tree. The branches that were placed in the good ground, however, have only been partially productive. The Lord and the servant take steps to help the vineyard continue to be productive, and then they leave.

The second visit is thought to represent the time of Christ when the gentiles were grafted in and became part of God's covenant people. At this time there was wide spread righteousness among God's covenant people. The branches that are grafted into the good ground are thought to be the Nephites and Lamanites since they eventually turned into a divided civilization, some righteous and some wicked, where the wicked eventually overcame the righteous.

The Third Visit
Again a long time passes away and the Lord tells the servant that they are going to work in the vineyard once again. However, this time the Lord of the vineyard is worried that there is not much time left before the season would be over and the tree would not be able to grow any more.

They arrive at the vineyard to find that the original tree had lots of fruit, but that none of it was good. After inspecting the trees where the young branches had been placed they find the same scenario; lots of fruit but none of it good. They also find that the branches from the original tree that are were grafted into the good ground, that had previously been partially productive, had been overcome by the wild branches and died.

The Lord of the vineyard then laments that he had done everything he can to help his tree, but now he is worried that he will have to cut the tree down and burn it. He also laments the loss of the branches that were moved to the good ground, especially since he had to clear the good ground in order to make room for them.

The third visit is thought to represent the time of apostasy, where none of God's covenant people were righteous. Also, the branches that were placed in the good ground, or the Nephites, have been destroyed by the other branches. This state of apostasy leads to the restoration.

The Fourth Visit
The Lord of the vineyard never actually leaves the vineyard, but rather starts by a return to the original tree. He initially decides to cut down all the trees in the vineyard, but he is convinced by his servant to give them a little more time.

The Lord instructs the servant to call other servants, and to graft the branches that he had taken form the original tree back into the original tree. Then the servants are supposed to do everything they can to help the trees grow. As the servants find that trees are producing good fruit they are to cut off the branches that are not being productive, thus slowly eliminating the bad branches without killing the tree as a whole.

The Lords plan is effective. Slowly, the entire vineyard is changed and is productive with good fruit. Eventually all the bad branches are removed and burned, and the good branches are all that are left in the vineyard. The allegory ends with the Lord telling the servants that if the time comes that bad branches are found again in the vineyard, he will end up burning the entire vineyard.

This visit is thought to represent the last days where God restores his covenant people. The branches that were scatter are returned to their original tree, representing the gathering of Israel. It is interesting to note that the restoration is gradual, at least symbolically, and leads to a time where the wicked have been removed from the earth. This would be in line with the understanding of the millennium. When Satan is loosed at the end of the millennium the earth will be burned with fire.

Graphical Representation of The Allegory of the Olive Tree
The following table Done for now, feel free to edit.

The fifth Chapter in the Book of Jacob (or Jacob 5) is the longest single chapter in the Book of Mormon at 77 verses.

Attempting to correlate every item of an allegory (or parable) precisely with some outside reality is unproductive. However, certain major elements should be defined if the allegory itself is to be understood. The following items seem important in Zenos’s allegory:
{|
| Item || Interpretation
|-

The following table Since the person who searches MormonWiki is usually not a member of the Mormon Church, Mormon contributors are asked to explain at length concepts that might be new to the searcher. Also, Wiki articles are reporting on the beliefs and practices of The Church, and do so in journalistic style, which means using the third person. Instead of "we believe," it's "they believe."

Internal links take a bit of busy work, since caps and phrasing have to be exactly the same as the Wiki article referred to. The exact title of the article comes first, then a pipe (|), then the linked word. Look at this article and see the added internal links. When the link shows red, there's no article for the word on Wiki, and that means someone needs to write one. I'm adding angels, Gadianton robbers, and flood to the articles-needed list. Thanks so much, dumbcomputer for your good work!!Gboyd 15:48, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the editing help, it looks good again. I have been trying to figure out the links, and I got the red vs blue distinction. I thought that simply adding the brackets around the word had been working since it usually ended up where I wanted it. I can understand using the "pipe" method when the linked word is not the exact same as the desired page, but should I be using the "pipe" on all links, even if they work standing alone in the brackets? The Book of Revelation states,
:And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
:And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
:And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him (Revelation 12: 4, 7-9).
Thus Lucifer (Satan), and 1/3 of the host of heaven who followed Lucifer, battled against Michael (who would become Adam), and then were cast out to the earth.

Time line of the War in Heaven
Council in Heaven
The extensive nature of the council in Heaven suggests that it was ongoing. Also, the term council does not necessarily refer to a one time event but could also refer to an organization. In other words, the council in heaven could refer to a one time event, or to a group of individuals counseling together.

Lucifer was a participant in the council in heaven. He was considered a "Son of the Morning" and was "in authority in the presence of God" prior to his fall. As the plan of salvation was presented in the council in heaven, God explained that there would be a need for someone to enable God's children to return to Him from the earthly experience. All of God's children would sin during their sojourn on earth, and Adam's predicted fall would result in both physical and spiritual death, from which God's children would need to be redeemed.

God's plan "from the beginning" was to rely on Jehovah (Christ). However, at some point God sought the common consent of His spirit children, as to who would be sent to earth. Lucifer presented a different plan from God's original, wherein he would take Jehovah's place here on earth. Lucifer promised that if he were given this opportunity "that one soul shall not be lost." While innocent and appealing on its face, the only way that Lucifer could make good on this promise would be to force everyone to either obey all the commandments or to force them to accept him as their redeemer. By forcing God's children to take one of those paths the agency of man would be compromised. The fact that Lucifer was attempting to "destroy the agency of man, which I, the Lord God had given him," and the fact that he wanted God's "honor" or "power" in return for his services, caused Lucifer to lose his place in the "authority and presence of God" (to be "cast down").

It should also be noted that Jehovah's response to Lucifer's plan was to assure God that Jehovah would do His will ("thy will be done"). Additionally Jehovah added "the glory be thine [God's] forever."

The War
When God chose Jehovah, Lucifer "became angry" and "kept not his first estate." As he left the council in heaven "that day, many followed after him." Following his angry exit from the council, Lucifer completed his fall and rebelled against "The Only Begotten Son," or Jehovah, thus starting the war in heaven.

While Lucifer lead 1/3 of the heavenly hosts, Michael, or Adam as he was called on earth, lead those who fought against Lucifer. Not much is known of the mechanics of the war, except that in the end Lucifer was overcome by "by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their [Michael's followers] testimony." In this instance testimony most likely means "an official or legal declaration of what a person perceives as truth." This implies that Lucifer was overcome by declaring that the blood of the Lamb would be sufficient to enable those who came to earth to return to live with God. One could conclude that the "war" revolved around the faith in Jehovah to come to earth, live a perfect life, and do all of the other things necessary to become the redeemer while still retaining His and man's agency.

Expulsion of Lucifer and his Followers
Once Michael and his angels overcame Lucifer, Lucifer was "cast out" and "down to the earth" along with those who followed him. This suggests that the expulsion of Lucifer and his followers followed the creation of the earth, but was obviously prior to Michael's introduction to the Garden of Eden.

It is interesting to note that Lucifer does not gain the name of Satan until after his expulsion. This is evidenced by the revelation to the Prophet Joseph wherein he was told "...I caused that he should be cast down; and he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the father of all lies..."

Michael and his Followers
All who kept their “first estate” (premortal life) were promised that they would “be added upon”(which includes receiving mortal bodies). All who keep their second estate will have “glory added upon their heads for ever and ever” (Abraham 3:26).

The War in Our Day
The Bible dictionary in the LDS version of the bible adds:
:The warfare is continued in mortality in the conflict between right and wrong; between the gospel and false principles, etc. The same contestants and the same issues are doing battle, and the same salvation is at stake.
:Although one-third of the spirits became devils, the remaining two-thirds were not all equally valiant, there being every degree of devotion to Christ and the Father among them. The most diligent were chosen to be rulers in the kingdom (Abraham 3: 22-23). I have a question regarding doctrine, however. I believe the council in heaven was not to choose whom the Father would send, but to ratify or give common consent to the already-chosen Jehovah. I've made some small revisions to your text, but have not corrected that. I wonder whether you could verify the doctrine and make the revision, if necessary. The Book of Revelation states that in the war "Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and prevailed not...and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." . Thus Lucifer and 1/3 of the host of heaven who followed Lucifer battled against Michael, or Adam, were cast out to the earth.

Timeline of the War in Heaven
Council in Heaven
The extensive nature of the council in Heaven suggests that it was ongoing. Also, the term council does not necessarily refer to a one time event but could also refer to an organization. In other words, the council in heaven could refer to a one time event, or to a group of individuals counciling together.

Lucifer was a part of the council in heaven. He was considered a "Son of the Morning" and was "in authority in the presence of God" prior to his fall. As the plan of salvation was established in the council in heaven, it became apparent that there would be a need for someone to enable God's children to return to him from the earthly experience.

God's plan "from the beginning" was to rely on Jehovah. However, at some point in time God sought input as to who would be sent to earth.

It should be noted that Jehovah's response to Lucifer's plan was to assure God that no matter what path God picked, Jehovah would do his will ("thy will be done"). Additionally Jehovah added "the glory be thine [God's] forever."

The War
When God chose Jehovah, Lucifer "became angry" and "kept not his first estate." As he left the council in heaven "that day, many followed after him." Following his angry exit from the council Lucifer completed his fall and rebelled against "The Only Begotten Son," or Jehovah, thus starting the war in heaven.

While Lucifer lead 1/3 of the heavenly hosts, Michael, or Adam as he was called on earth, lead those who fought against Lucifer. Not much is known of the mechanics of the war, except that in the end Lucifer was overcome by "by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their [Michael's followers] testimony." In this instance testimony most likely means "an official or legal declaration of what a person perceives as truth." This implies that the Lucifer was overcome by declaring that the blood of the Lamb would be sufficient to enable those who came to earth to return to live with God. One could conclude that the "war" revolved around our faith in Jehovah to come to earth, live a perfect life, and do all of the other things necessary to become our redeemer while still retaining his and our agency.

Expulsion of Lucifer and his Followers
Once Michael and his angels overcame Lucifer, Lucifer was "cast out".

The most diligent were chosen to be rulers in the kingdom (Abr. 3: 22-23). The nature of the conflict, however, is such that there could be no neutrals, then or now (Matt. 12: 30; 1 Ne. 14: 10; Alma 5: 38-40).

----
<references />
Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Liahona_Compass&diff=15785 Liahona Compass 2008-03-17T06:33:15Z
Dumbcomputer: Added disambiguation link, other links

For the magazine named Liahona see Liahona Magazine

The Liahona was an object that God gave to Lehi, a prophet in the Book of Mormon, and his family as a guide. It is first mentioned in 1 Nephi 16:10. The Liahona is described as a round ball, made of brass, with two pointers that gave directions, similar to a compass. In Lehi's language, "Liahona" meant "a compass" (see Alma 37:38). However the Liahona differed from a compass because it only worked if Lehi and his family were being righteous (see 1 Nephi 16: 28-29, and Alma 37:40) and exerted the proper faith. They also received instruction through the Liahona. In 1 Nephi 16:29 it says that there was a place on the outside of the Liahona where writing would appear and change from time to time. It is also mentioned that there was sometimes written on the pointers.

The Liahona passed from Lehi to his son Nephi (2 Nephi 5:12), and then from generation to generation down to Mosiah, who gave it to his son Benjamin. The Liahona continued to be passed down through the prophets until it reached Moroni, the last Nephite prophet. In the early fifth century A.D., Moroni hid the Liahona in a hill along with the Book of Mormon record. In 1823, the prophet Joseph Smith was told by revelation where to find these items.

The three men chosen to be special latter-day witnesses of the Gold Plates (David Whitmer, Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris) also saw the Liahona (see Doctrine and Covenants 17:1).

The word Liahona has taken on great symbolic meaning for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is often used to stand for the idea of being righteous, allowing Heavenly Father to be our guide, and any other figurative compass that points us to Christ. It is also the name given to the Church's international magazine. This symbolism stems from a lecture given by a Book of Mormon prophet named Alma to his son Helaman. Alma says:

:I have somewhat to say concerning the thing which our fathers call a ball, or director—or our fathers called it Liahona, which is, being interpreted, a compass; and the Lord prepared it. And behold, there cannot any man work after the manner of so curious a workmanship. And behold, it was prepared to show unto our fathers the course which they should travel in the wilderness. And it did work for them according to their faith in God; therefore, if they had faith to believe that God could cause that those spindles should point the way they should go, behold, it was done; therefore they had this miracle, and also many other miracles wrought by the power of God, day by day....
:And now, my son, I would that ye should understand that these things are not without a shadow; for as our fathers were slothful to give heed to this compass (now these things were temporal) they did not prosper; even so it is with things which are spiritual. For behold, it is as easy to give heed to the word of Christ, which will point to you a straight course to eternal bliss, as it was for our fathers to give heed to this compass, which would point unto them a straight course to the promised land. And now I say, is there not a type in this thing? For just as surely as this director did bring our fathers, by following its course, to the promised land, shall the words of Christ, if we follow their course, carry us beyond this vale of sorrow into a far better land of promise.... The way is prepared, and if we will look we may live forever (Alma 37:38-46).

For a more in-depth article about the Liahona read "The Design of the Liahona and the Purpose of the Second Spindle" by Robert L. The predominate use of the word covenant is between God and a person or group of persons, upon which eternal blessings are based.

Covenants With God
When God covenants with man, God usually sets specific conditions. If we are obedient to those conditions then God promises to bless us. In covenanting with God we are not on equal ground; God sets the terms. We are told that God may send angels to "do the work of the covenants".

Saving Covenants
Some covenants are required for salvation. However, simply making these saving covenants does not make us worthy to return to live with God. The grace of Christ is required, making these covenants necessary, but not sufficient for salvation. Some well-known examples of these covenants include the baptismal covenant, the sacrament covenant (which renews the baptismal covenant), the oath and covenant of the priesthood, the temple endowment, and the marriage covenant. Notice that in all these saving covenants, a priesthood ordinance is associated with it.

Covenants Not Required for Salvation
There are additional covenants that have been or are made with God, but they are not required for salvation. Examples of these include the Abrahamic covenant, covenants with the house of Israel, and the covenant that God has made with us that he will never again flood the earth. While these covenants are important for a variety of reasons, neither the scriptures nor modern day prophets have listed them as covenants necessary for salvation.

Covenants With Others Than God
There are covenants in the scriptures that are not made with God, such as the covenant between David and Jonathon and the (averted) covenant between the Israelites (of Jabesh-gilead) and the Ammonites.

Covenant Signs and Tokens in the Scriptures
Sometimes a sign or token is given with the covenant. For example the book of Genesis mentions that the rainbow "is a token of the covenant" that God made with all the earth, and that circumcision was a token of the Abrahamic covenant. Additionally, the wicked Jaredites and Gadianton robbers of the Book of Mormon had signs which were used to distinguish those who had made covenants as part of those "abominable" organizations.

Failure to Live Up to Covenants
If we keep the promises that we make in a covenant, then God will bless us. However, failure to live up to the covenants we make usually results in some sort of punishment, including being considered unworthy to be with God

----
<references />

Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=User:Dumbcomputer&diff=15778 User:Dumbcomputer 2008-03-17T04:27:51Z
Dumbcomputer: Dumbcomputer's agenda

Eventually someone will check in on this page just to see what I am about.

I am currently a law student at Gonzaga University, hopefully to graduate in 2010. I ask because one of the pages I read made it look like the intent is mostly to push the anti stuff off the search engine lists.
#where is the best forum for me to ask questions like these?

I have never contributed to a wiki, although I think that Wikipedia is phenominal.

----
<references />
Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Repentance&diff=15770 Repentance 2008-03-16T20:52:26Z
Dumbcomputer: Added Joseph Smith quote, link

----
<references />

Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Deathbed_repentance&diff=15769 Deathbed repentance 2008-03-16T20:51:28Z
Dumbcomputer: Created Page

Some have taken the story told by Luke, of the Saviour telling the criminal on the cross next to him "To day shalt thou be with me in paradise", as evidence that salvation can come while on the deathbed. Modern day revelation gives us further insight into the concept of deathbed repentance.

The Prophet Joseph Smith said
:“The infidel will grasp at every straw for help until death stares him in the face, and then his infidelity takes its flight, for the realities of the eternal world are resting upon him in mighty power; and when every earthly support and prop fails him, he then sensibly feels the eternal truths of the immortality of the soul. We should take warning and not wait for the death-bed to repent; as we see the infant taken away by death, so may the youth and middle aged, as well as the infant be suddenly called into eternity. Let this, then, prove as a warning to all not to procrastinate repentance, or wait till a death-bed, for it is the will of God that man should repent and serve Him in health, and in the strength and power of his mind, in order to secure His blessing, and not wait until he is called to die.”

Additionally, President Spencer W. Kimball wrote in his book The Miracle of Forgiveness;
:“It is true that the great principle of repentance is always available, but for the wicked and rebellious there are serious reservations to this statement. For instance, sin is intensely habit-forming and sometimes moves men to the tragic point of no return. Without repentance there can be no forgiveness, and without forgiveness all the blessings of eternity hang in jeopardy. As the transgressor moves deeper and deeper in his sin, and the error is entrenched more deeply and the will to change is weakened, it becomes increasingly near-hopeless, and he skids down and down until either he does not want to climb back or he has lost the power to do so”

These teachings suggest that while the Saviour is capable of saving anyone, even on their deathbed, waiting to repent until the deathbed is an extraordinarily bad and idea contrary to the intent of the Saviour.

----
<references />
Dumbcomputer https://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Resurrection&diff=15763 Resurrection 2008-03-16T05:37:32Z
Dumbcomputer: Added a section comparing being raised from the dead

According to the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons), the term Resurrection means the literal reuniting of the spirit with the physical body after death. After resurrection, the spirit and body will be united eternally and perfectly. All people who have ever lived on the earth, do now live, or will live, will become immortal through the resurrection. Jesus Christ's resurrection overcame death for all:
:But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
:For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
:For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. (1 Corinthians 15: 20-22).

Alma, a Book of Mormon prophet, said the following:
:Now, this restoration shall come to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, both the wicked and the righteous; and even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be lost; but every thing shall be restored to its perfect frame, as it is now, or in the body, and shall be brought and be arraigned before the bar of Christ the Son, and God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, which is one Eternal God, to be judged according to their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil. (Alma 11: 44)

Mormon Church President Gordon B. Hinckley said the following about the miracle of Christ's resurrection:
:Here was the greatest miracle of human history. Earlier He had told them, 'I am the resurrection, and the life' (John 11:25). But they had not understood. Now they knew. He had died in misery and pain and loneliness. Now, on the third day, He arose in power and beauty and life, the firstfruits of all who slept, the assurance for men of all ages that 'as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive' (1 Corinthians 15:22).
:On Calvary He was the dying Jesus. From the tomb He emerged the Living Christ. The cross had been the bitter fruit of Judas's betrayal, the summary of Peter's denial. The empty tomb now became the testimony of His divinity, the assurance of eternal life, the answer to Job's unanswered question: 'If a man die, shall he live again?' (Job 14:14) ("The Symbol of Our Faith," Ensign, Apr. 2005, 4-5)

Jesus Christ was the first person who was resurrected. The New Testament provides much evidence that this is true. When Christ was resurrected, many others who were righteous were also resurrected (See 1 Corinthians 15: 22-23).

Mormons believe, therefore, in a literal, physical resurrection where the resurrected will have tangible bodies of flesh and bone. Jesus Christ's resurrection is the perfect example of this. The Apostles record that he ate and had a body of flesh and bones (see Luke 24:36-43). When Jesus appeared to the ancient inhabitants in America, he likewise showed them that he had a perfect, physical form (See 3 Nephi 11). Mormons teach that resurrected bodies are not susceptible to disease or pain. The Book of Mormon declares that "All things shall be restored to their proper and perfect frame"(Alma 40:23). People will have the same knowledge that they gained in this life, and will also have some of the same desires (see Doctrine and Covenants 130:18-19). We will be able to continue learning after this life as well.

The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that the body is a holy thing; Paul, in fact, compared it to a temple (1 Corinthians 3:16). The body is not denigrated in Mormonism, but is accorded honor as Mormons teach that God himself has a perfect, resurrected body, as does Jesus. The body should therefore be treated with honor and never abused. Joseph Smith taught that one of the purposes of life is to obtain "a body and present it pure before God in the celestial kingdom" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg 181). The Doctrine and Covenants teaches that the dead dwelling in the Spirit World, who have not yet been resurrected, view separation from the body as a type of bondage (Section 138:50). Mormons believe that only with a body can a person obtain a fulness of joy:
:For man is spirit. The elements are eternal, and spirit and element, inseparably connected, receive a fulness of joy;
:And when separated, man cannot receive a fulness of joy. (Doctrine and Covenants 93: 33-34)

:Their sleeping dust was to be restored unto its perfect frame, bone to his bone, and the sinews and the flesh upon them, the spirit and the body to be united never again to be divided, that they might receive a fulness of joy. (Doctrine and Covenants 138: 17)

:And for this cause ye shall have fulness of joy; and ye shall sit down in the kingdom of my Father; yea, your joy shall be full, even as the Father hath given me fulness of joy; and ye shall be even as I am, and I am even as the Father; and the Father and I are one; (3 Nephi 28: 10)

The First Resurrection
The "First Resurrection" occured when Christ was resurrected from the dead. The spirits of the righteous who died before Christ were joined with their risen bodies and resurrected:
:And behold, again it hath been spoken, that there is a first resurrection, a resurrection of all those who have been, or who are, or who shall be, down to the resurrection of Christ from the dead.
:...it meaneth the reuniting of the soul with the body, of those from the days of Adam down to the resurrection of Christ. (Alma 40:16,18)

There will be another resurrection, often called the "First Resurrection." It will occur at the Second Coming of Christ. It is called the First Resurrection, because there will be later resurrections of the unjust:
:And again we bear record—for we saw and heard, and this is the testimony of the gospel of Christ concerning them who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just—
:They are they who received the testimony of Jesus, and believed on his name and were baptized after the manner of his burial, being buried in the water in his name, and this according to the commandment which he has given—
:That by keeping the commandments they might be washed and cleansed from all their sins, and receive the Holy Spirit by the laying on of the hands of him who is ordained and sealed unto this power;
:And who overcome by faith, and are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, which the Father sheds forth upon all those who are just and true. (Doctrine and Covenants 76:50-53)

Resurrection compared to Being Raised From the Dead
Resurrection should not be confused with being raised from the dead. For example, John tells the story of a man named Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, who had been dead four days. The Saviour commanded his dead body to come forth from the tomb it was buried in, which Lazarus did. (John 11)
Another example of being raised from the dead comes from Lehi, son of Nephi, son of Helaman. Lehi had been stoned and died, but the Book of Mormon then tells us that Nephi raised him from the dead. (3 Nephi 7:19)

In both of these instances the individual was brought back to life before the Saviour worked out the atonement and was resurrected. Yet we are plainly told that Christ would be the first one to be resurrected. This exemplifies the difference between being resurrected with an immortal body of flesh and bone, never to have the spirit and the body separated again, and being raised from the dead. Those who had only been raised from the dead retained their imperfect mortal body of flesh and blood.

----
<references/>

Dumbcomputer
