He worked for financial firms and was the chief financial officer for a land development firm. In 1980 he made a shift in his career path and began working for the Church as financial manager for the Church welfare services. In July 1981, he became managing director. In this role he was able to tour underdeveloped countries, including a trip to Ethiopia with [[M. Russell Ballard]] to direct disbursement of Church donations for famine relief.

He served as second counselor in the Presiding Bishopric until October 3, 1992, when he was sustained as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy.
