Brian Theadore “Ted” Stewart is Senior Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Utah; he assumed office on September 1, 2014. He was appointed Judge of the United States District Court in 1999 by President Bill Clinton. He was in office from November 11, 1999, to September 1, 2014. He was Chief Judge from 2011 to 2014.
Stewart earned his bachelor’s degree from Utah State University and his juris doctorate degree from S. J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah. From 1974 to 1980, he practiced law in a private legal firm in Salt Lake City. In 1980 he served as an assistant to Senator Orrin Hatch; from 1981 to 1985 he worked as an administrative assistant to US Representative James V. Hansen. From 1985 to 1992, he was commissioner on the Public Service Commission of Utah. From 1993 until 1998, he served as chief of staff to Michael O. Leavitt.
