The São Paulo East Brazil Temple is the twelfth temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be built in Brazil. President Russell M. Nelson announced its construction on October 4, 2020, during general conference.[1]
The first temple in São Paulo, Brazil was built in 1978. There are more than 30 stakes of the Church in São Paulo with many more in the surrounding region. Brazil is home to approximately 1.5 million Latter-day Saints, and it operates 35 missions—second only to the United States. In 1986, Brazil became the third country outside the United States to have 50 stakes. As of 2022, Brazil has 281 stakes.
The São Paulo East Brazil Temple will be the fourth temple built outside of the United States in the same metropolitan area as another operating temple, following Lima, Peru; the Greater Manila Area in the Philippines, and the Guatemala City metropolitan area in Guatemala.[2] Three cities in Utah also have two temples: South Jordan, Utah; Provo, Utah; and St. George, Utah.
Location
The São Paulo East Brazil Temple is currently in the planning stages. Its location was announced by the Church on October 31, 2022. The planned two-story building of approximately 46,050 square feet will be built on a 10.7-acre site located at Av. Guilherme Giorgi, 1091, Vila Carrão in São Paulo, on the east side of the city.
