Matthew L. Carpenter was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at General Conference on March 31, 2018. He had been serving as a member of the Sixth Quorum of the Seventy in the North America Central Area at the time of his call. He has also served in the Church as a Young Men president, high councilor, bishop, stake president, Area Seventy, and full-time missionary in the Swiss Geneva Mission.

Carpenter was born on October 21, 1959, in Salt lake City, Utah. He holds a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School and earned a bachelor of science degree in business management from Brigham Young University. He most recently was managing director of Genesis Financial Services Fund and Foundation Specialty Financing Fund.

He and his wife, Shelly (Michelle), are the parents of five children.
