Sal Velluto is a comic book illustrator. He drew stories on notebook papers when he was ten years old and traded with his friends. He even tried to sell them subscriptions to his work. At age twelve, the Italian Batman comic book published one of his drawings. He began working in comic book illustration professionally through Marvel in 1988. He moved to DC Comics in 1992, returning to Marvel in 1999. He has also drawn extensively independently.

Among his credits are Power Pack, Moon Knight, Silver Surfer, Black Panther (Marvel); X-O Manowar (Valiant); Green Hornet (Now); Armor (Continuity); Lazarus Ledd (Star Comics); Justice League Task Force, Firebrand, Justice League (JLA) and Justice Society (JSA) titles, Aquaman and the Flash occasionally (DC Comics); the Phantom (Egmont/Frew); and Bloodshot reimagined (Acclaim).

He has also created trading cards and character designs for video games such as Sony Play Station’s Jet Moto.

Velluto is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has illustrated regularly for the Friend magazine, including the stories of Joseph Smith's life. He collaborated with Andrew Knaupp to create a graphic novel of the First Vision called Pillar of Light. Knaupp said, "We were both very interested in telling this story in a way that had not been done before in the previous films or story adaptations. We wanted to include details contained in the four official accounts that haven't been portrayed visually before. This included the presence of angels, the difficult battle with Satan, the influence of [Joseph Smith's] mother's personal testimony of her near-death experience, and the physical nature of the pillar of light."
