Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints often say they participated in “sealings” in the temple or that someone in their lineage or posterity, or an individual who was adopted, was “sealed” to his or her family.

They are referring to the priesthood ordinance in the temple that allows family members to be bound together as a family unit for eternity. Just as an envelope can be connected together securely and the contents stay together, a husband, wife, and their children can be connected together forever and no one is lost.

For a deeper discussion of sealing and the sealing power, see “Sealing Power.”
