Brian C. Hill is the CEO and founder of Edovo (Education over Obstacles), a company that uses modified tablet computers to provide prison inmates with more purposeful options. The idea came to him while working on a project with Cook County Jail in Chicago to reduce the inmate population. He noticed the amount of time the inmates spent watching daytime television while incarcerated and he knew he could do better than that. The mission of Edovo is to “help everyone connected to incarceration build better lives.”[1] According to Rand Corp., more than 50 percent of inmates return behind bars after release, but educational and vocational programming can reduce recidivism, or the rate at which former inmates return to the criminal justice system, by 43 percent in three years.[2]

Hill originally focused on people in jail, but has expanded to include prison inmates, as well as those who have served their time and are back out in the world, so they can continue to use the content. Edovo was created in March 2013 and as of the end of 2017, Edovo programs are now in 20 states.

The tablets provide GED preparation, vocational training, treatment programs, college courses, cognitive behavioral therapy, coding classes, and even the LDS Gospel Library. Hill is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hill’s father was a prison teacher, and he remembers his father reading to him using stories and essays written by his father’s students. Hill earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Brigham Young University. He was a JD/MBA candidate in 2105 at Northwestern University, the Kellogg School of Management.
