On April 7, 2019, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Budapest Hungary Temple, the sixteenth temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Europe. At the time of its announcement, members of the Church in Hungary travel many hours to the Freiberg Germany Temple to participate in temple worship.

Hungary is home over 5,200 Latter-day Saints organized into more than 20 congregations. The first missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ arrived in Hungary in 1885. Missionary efforts ceased for several decades following World War I.

On April 19, 1987, President Russell M. Nelson, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, dedicated Hungary for missionary work in a prayer and a ceremony on Budapest's Gellert Hill. On June 1, 1988, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints received official recognition and the first missionaries arrived. Hungary's first meetinghouse was dedicated in October 1989, by President Thomas S. Monson, then a counselor in the First Presidency, with President Nelson also attending. The Hungary Budapest Mission was created in June 1990. The nation’s first stake, the Budapest Hungary Stake was organized on June 4, 2006. The Church has maintained a small presence in the country since the late 1800s.[1]

Location

The Budapest Hungary Temple is currently in the planning stages. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that the temple will be built on a 5.92-acre site located at Kocsis Sandor ut and Borsikafu utca, Harsanylejto, Budapest, Hungary. Plans call for a one-story temple of approximately 18,000 square feet, as well as an arrival center and patron housing.
