On April 7, 2019, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Budapest Hungary Temple, the sixteenth temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Europe. At the time of its announcement, members of the Church in Hungary travel many hours to the Freiberg Germany Temple to participate in temple worship.
Hungary is home to over 5,200 Latter-day Saints organized into more than 20 congregations. The first missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ arrived in Hungary in 1885. Missionary efforts ceased for several decades following World War I.
