Clive Romney: Mormon Musician
Clive Romney is a veteran of the music business, having spent over forty years as a songwriter, composer, arranger, performer, recording producer, and teacher. He produces as many as ten albums each year in his recording studio, Pitchfork Studios. He has produced more than 130 albums. He plays numerous instruments, including guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, accordion, percussion, and various ethnic instruments such as dan tranh, charango, and bodhran. He has won several Pearl Awards, including Instrumental Album of the Year, 2002.
Romney founded and directs Enoch Train, an eight-person ensemble that performs and records folk-flavored instrumental arrangements of hymns, children’s songs, and Americana music. He also founded Willingly, a four-person pioneer band that travels the state of Utah presenting pioneer history to elementary schools and community audiences. He has also performed with other ensembles, including Grouse Creek Lily, Caboose, and Manassas.
Romney performs as a storyteller and singer-songwriter. His original stories and songs tell of the Utah pioneers and the extraordinary lives they lived because of the circumstances they faced.
He taught introduction to the music business and songwriting at Brigham Young University as well as other music courses at Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah. He wrote the lyrics for animated films Swan Princess II, III, and IV. He wrote the music and lyrics for “Over the Edge at the Grand Canyon” (commissioned by the National Park). He wrote “Scripture Power,” a favorite song included in the LDS Children’s Songbook and the music for “High Hopes and Riverboats,” the Nauvoo Visitors’ Center show. He produced 40 episodes of “Histories of the Hymns” and 40 of “Music with a Message” for The Mormon Channel. Romney is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He has also served as executive director of Utah Pioneer Heritage Arts and the Legacy Series. He is creative director for “Story Road Utah,” which tells the pioneer stories of Utah communities and families. He and his wife, Bonnie, are the parents of five children.
