Southwick lettered in football at Timpview High School in Provo, Utah. After serving a two-year mission to Texas for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he played football for a number of colleges, including Oregon State University, Dixie State College, University of Utah, and Occidental College. His professional career began when he signed with the Louisville Fire, which he played with for one season before the franchise folded.
