The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints encourages Families to live within their means and to strive to be as self sufficient as possible. This includes avoiding debt. Latter-day Saints are strongly encouraged to build up an emergency supply of food, clothing, and where possible, fuel, to prepare for unexpected disaster or temporary loss of income. Fathers are expected to be the ones primarily responsible for providing for the family, allowing mothers to stay in the home. Tithes equal one-tenth of the family's income. Latter-day Saints believe in the admonition of Malachi:
