Gary Scheide is the first of a string of All-American quarterbacks to come out of Brigham Young University under the coaching of LaVell Edwards. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Scheide was born in 1952 and grew up in Antioch, California. He played football, basketball, and baseball in high school and quarterbacked in junior college. Edwards recruited him as a transfer student to quarterback for BYU. He led the program to the WAC championship in 1974. Also that year he was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy, given to the year's best passer. He is one of seven Cougars to win the award, more than any other school. Sheide was selected in the 3rd round (64th overall pick) of the 1975 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals but never played in the National Football League. He now coaches high school football.

Scheide was featured in a book by Lee Benson: And They Came to Pass: BYU's Amazing String of All-American QB's. Salt Lake City, UT: Deseret Book, 1988.
