Howard Lyon is an artist who works as an art director in the video game industry. He is also a concept artist and freelance illustrator. His work can be found in products such as Dungeons and Dragon’s books, World of Warcraft cards, Magic: The Gathering, and Star Wars. Lyon illustrated for the online fantasy and science fiction magazine the InterGalactic Medicine Show, founded by Orson Scott Card.

Lyon was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. At age twelve, he told his parents he wanted to be an artist and they provided art supplies and enrolled him in classes. He earned his bachelor’s degree in illustration from Brigham Young University. He has studied art in Italy, France, and most recently at the Grand Central Academy in New York.

Lyon has expanded into inspirational art in the style of some of his favorite old masters, such as William Bouguereau, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and John William Waterhouse. His work in this genre has garnered praise, including a Merit Award in the 26th Annual Spiritual and Religious Art of Utah Exhibition for From Fear to Faith, which was also one of six pieces chosen out of 200 as the viewer’s Choice Award as part of the 9th international religious show at the LDS Church History and Art Museum; and the Award for Exceptional Merit in the 2011 International Artist Competition at the Wee Gallery of Fine Art for Living Water.

His work has appeared in the Ensign magazine. Two of his large, 15-foot murals adorn the baptistery of the new Gilbert Arizona Temple. His work is also included in the Provo City Center Temple. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He and his wife, Shari, live in Utah with their children. He also teaches a small group of students at the Lyon Art School.
