Hyrum W. Smith is the co-founder and vice chairman of Franklin Covey Company, which is a learning and performance solutions company dedicated to increasing the effectiveness of individuals and organizations. Smith created the Franklin Planner and seminars on productivity development based on the "belief window" and other concepts.

Franklin Covey Company was organized as Franklin Quest Company in 1981 and merged with Stephen Covey’s Covey Leadership Center in May 1997. Smith was the Chief Executive Officer from February 1997 to March 1998 and from April 1991 to September 1996.

Smith is the author of 10 Natural Laws of Successful Time and Life Management (1994) and What Matters Most (2001) as well as audio tapes.

He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has also written two religious books: Where Eagles Rest (1982) a collections of sermons he has given over the years, and Pain is Inevitable, Misery is Optional (2004) about his excommunication from and his rebaptism into the Church.
