There are eleven stakes in Indiana, and these Latter-day Saints must currently travel 130 miles to the Louisville Kentucky Temple to attend. The new Mormon temple will serve 25,000 members in the area. LDS Church membership in Indiana is about 42,000.
On Saturday, September 29, 2012, LDS Church and community leaders broke ground for the Indianapolis Indiana Mormon Temple. The ceremony was conducted by Elder Donald L. Hallstrom of the Presidency of the Seventy. Elder Gregory A. Schwitzer of the Seventy also assisted, as did local Church and community leaders.
Open House, Cultural Celebration and Temple Dedication
An open house for the Indianapolis Indiana Temple will be held from Friday, 17 July 2015 through Saturday, 8 August 2015. The open house is free to the public and will run every day except Sundays. There will not be an open house held on Sunday, 19 July, 26 July, and 2 August 2015.
