Janiece Johnson: Mormon Historian

Janiece Johnson is a professor and historian specializing in Mormon history and the Mountain Meadows Massacre. She has been a visiting professor in religion at BYU-Idaho. She previously worked on the Mountain Meadows Massacre for the history department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which she is a member. She is coauthor (with Jennifer Reeder) of The Witness of Women: Firsthand Experiences and Testimonies from the Restoration. She is one of the general editor of Mountain Meadows Massacre: Collected Legal Papers, published by the University of Oklahoma Press (2017).

Johnson is from the Bay Area, California. She holds a master’s degree in American religious history and theology from Brigham Young University, a master’s degree in theology from Vanderbilt University’s Divinity School. She also holds a PhD in American History from the University of Leicester in England. Her master’s thesis at BYU examined the religious experience of the earliest Mormon women. Her bachelor’s degree is in political science from BYU. She also taught religion at BYU while working on her master’s degree.
