John Serge Bennion is an associate professor at Brigham Young University where he teaches writing fiction and creative nonfiction. He is the author of numerous short stories and essays that have been published in journals such as Journal of Mormon History, Utah Historical Quarterly, Southwest Review, Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, High Country News, English Journal, AWP Chronicle, Hotel America, and others. He has collected his short stories in the volume Breeding Leah and Other Stories. He is also the author of Falling Toward Heaven, Avenging Saint, and Ezekiel’s Third Wife.

Bennion is a native of the Utah desert and has developed a number of programs that encompass both landscape and writing, such as Wilderness Writing, Literature and Landscape, Integrated Natural History, and Insects, Writing, and Art. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Utah State University, a master’s degree in English from BYU, and a PhD in literature and creative writing from the University of Houston.

He lives in Utah with his wife, Karla. They are the parents of five children. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
