John E. Tullidge Jr.
John E. Tullidge Jr. was a landscape painter, mural painter, and ornamental painter.
He was born April 17, 1836, in Weymouth, England, to musician John E. Tullidge. He displayed artistic talent early and at the age of 14 was apprenticed to an English decorative painter. After his conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he immigrated to Utah Territory in 1863 and helped George Ottinger and Dan Weggeland found the short-lived Deseret Academy of Fine Arts.
He painted murals for the Church of Jesus Christ in the Salt Lake Temple, the St. George Utah Temple, the Logan Utah Temple, and the Manti Utah Temple.
He took may trips to the canyons of Utah, the Great Salt Lake, and other places. His painting “Sunset on Great Salt Lake” always won first prize in exhibitions. “His paintings of Lake Mary, Lake Martha and Lake Solitude at Brighton, also showed his skill in the combination of water, landscape, sky and atmosphere. “[1]
John married Mary Jane Mathews in Liverpool, England. She requested a divorce one year after they were married due to the law of plural marriage. They had four children before the divorce was finalized, the first of which died and was buried on the plains. He then married Mary Ann (Polly) Bowering and they had 14 children. He died on June 20, 1899.
