He was a faculty member at BYU for more than thirty years where he was director of bands and professor of honors music theory. He founded the BYU Oratorio Choir and served as the dean of the College of Fine Arts from 1947 through 1948, when he was appointed the chair of the Department of Music. In 1975 he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award from BYU. He retired a year later.<br /> <br /> He and his wife, Flora, were the parents of four children.
