Joseph McRae is the co-founder and was co-owner of Heirloom Group, the owner of various restaurants. After attending the University of Utah, he attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and graduated with a certificate in Pastry Arts and Sciences. He then worked as pastry chef for eight years in San Francisco restaurants such as Rubicon, Jardiniere, and the Ritz Carlton.

Returning to Utah, he was executive pastry chef at Sundance. While there, he met chef Colton Soelberg and the two formed Heirloom Group. Their first restaurant was Pizzeria 712, which they opened in 2007. Communal, Mountain West Burrito, Heirloom Cafeteria Company, and Heirloom Catering followed.

After Soelberg left Heirloom to found a new restaurant, McRae spent more time with his original restaurant, Pizzeria 712, and sold Communal. Kevin Santiago bought Heirloom and restructured it to include several of Utah Valley’s top restaurants, including McRae’s and Soelberg’s.[1]

McRae was born and raised in Anaheim, California. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
