Bentley was born in Colonia Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, on March 6, 1906. After graduating from [[Brigham Young University]], he was a teacher and administrator in Utah and in Mexico. He began teaching in the accounting department of BYU in 1953, earned a master’s degree in 1955, and was appointed an assistant to university president [[Ernest L. Wilkinson]].
