Michelle Glasgow: Mormon Athlete
Michelle Glasgow Kemp is a former weightlifter. She started lifting weights at the age of eight and began competing in 2005. In April 2005 she took the Utah state championship and broke eight state records. In the summer, she lifted 115 kilograms for a Utah Summer Games and state record. In 2006 she won a gold medal for the best female lifer at the Pan American Sub 15 Weightlifting Championships. She lifted 58 kilograms in the snatch and 77 kilograms in the clean and jerk. Since that time she set Utah state records and won the USA Weightlifting National School-age Championships. She increased her personal best to 140 kilograms. Her father, Scott, was her coach. He was an Olympic lifter. He started training her to condition her for track and soccer.
In an interview with the Deseret News, she said, “I think it (weight lifting) is kind of temporary. It’s not going to be my life goal or anything.”[1]
After graduating from Provo High School, she went on to study at Brigham Young University and graduated with a bachelor’s in family life. She married Jake Kemp.
