Mike Allred: Mormon Artist
Mike Allred is a pop art-style comic book artist and writer. He has worked for Marvel Comics but is most famous for his independent comics Madman.
Allred was raised in Roseburg, Oregon, by his father. His first job was as a radio host in Roseburg. He was also a television reporter in Europe. The beginning of his comic book profession began in 1989 with the graphic novel Dead Air. His next works were Graphique Musique in 1990 and Grafik Muzik in 1990–1991. His Madman series debuted in 1992 and went on to garner him several Harvey Award nominations.
He drew the “World’s End” story arc for Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman series and for Peter Milligan’s X-Force series (X-Statix). He drew for Red Rocket 7. He collaborated again with Neil Gaiman on the Metamorpho feature in Wednesday Comics. He and writer Matt Fraction collaborated on FF, a spinoff of the Fantastic Four series. He also drew Dan Slott’s Silver Surfer series. He has drawn for numerous comics and covers throughout his career.[1]
His 2010–2012 comic iZombie was adapted into a 2015 television series also titled iZombie. He had a cameo appearance in the feature film Chasing Amy. He appeared in the opening scene, signing copies of his comic Madman at a comic book convention.
Allred is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and wrote and drew "The Golden Plates", an adaptation of the Book of Mormon.[2] His wife, Laura, is often his colorist—he has a color deficiency (color blindness) so it is difficult for him to distinguish between colors.[3] They are the parents of two sons. He is creating the DC series BUG! The Adventures of Forager with his brother, Lee (expected May 2018).
He received an AML Award in 2011 in the category of “Special Award in Graphical Narrative” for a lifetime of comic art.
