Milton Addis “Mitt” Romney was born on June 20, 1899, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to George Ernest Romney and Hannah Elizabeth Ottinger. He was best friends with his cousin George W. Romney, who named his son Mitt after him.

He was a professional football player and played offensive backfield for the Racine Legion from 1923 to 1924. He was a quarterback for the Chicago Bears from 1925 to 1928.

He played quarterback for the University of Chicago in the early 1920s. After his graduation, he was head basketball coach at the University of Texas, Austin for one season. He was a brother to E. L. "Dick" Romney, George Ottinger Romney, Wilford Woodruff "Woody" Romney, and Floyd Eccles Romney.

Romney was married twice; he married Ruth Haffenberg and after her death in 1937, he married Hazel Patricia Churchman.

He died on November 11, 1975, in Little Rock, Arkansas.
