On April 3, 2022, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Missoula Montana Temple.

Montana, located in the western United States and bordering Canada, is home to more than 50,000 Latter-day Saints and more than 125 congregations.

Prior to the Montana gold rush of the 1860s, a few members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traded with Flathead Indians and settled in the area. Others were acquainted with Montana by following the Montana Trail from the Church's Fort Lemhi settlement on the Salmon River. The gold discovery, followed by the overland railway completion in 1869, attracted some Church members to Montana. In 1896, the Montana Mission was organized. In October 1897, Church leaders in Montana received the promise of religious freedom from Governor John E. Rickards. A meeting of 75 people was held in Anaconda, and a gathering of 300 met in Butte later that spring.[1]

The Missoula Montana Temple will be the third temple for the state. The first, the Billings Montana Temple, was dedicated in November 1999. The Helena Montana Temple was announced in April 2021.[2]
