Monroe Gunn McKay is a senior United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
McKay was born in Huntsville, Utah, on May 30, 1928. He served in the US Marine Corps for two years prior to serving as a missionary in South Africa for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and holds a juris doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School.
Upon graduation, he began his career as a law clerk to Jesse Addison Udall, State Supreme Court Justice of Arizona. He then became an associate at the law firm of Lewis and Roca, becoming a partner in 1968. He stayed with the firm until 1974. He was a law professor at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU from 1974 to 1977. On November 2, 1977, US president Jimmy Carter nominated him to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. The US Senate confirmed him on November 29, 1977, and he was commissioned on December 1, 1977. He was Chief Judge from 1991 to 1993 and assumed senior status on December 31, 1993.
In 1966, McKay went overseas to be the director of the US Peace Corps in Malawi, Africa. He was there until 1968.
McKay and his wife, Lucille, have nine children. He is a brother to Gunn McKay.
