Richard J. Allen is a prolific author of articles, manuals, and books. He has coauthored with Ed J. Pinegar Teachings and Commentaries on the Book of Mormon; Commentaries and Insights on the Book of Mormon; Unlocking the Doctrine and Covenants; Book of Mormon Who’s Who; Words of Wisdom for Missionaries; Look to the Temple; On the Bright Side: Feeling Good When Things Seem Bad. His own books include The Gospel of Now; The Sabbath: His Gift to Us, Our Gift to Him; Eternal Womanhood; Come Unto Me; Study Commentary on the Old Testament; Unlocking the New Testament; New Testament Who’s Who; Mission Prep Study Guide.

He has served as a faculty member at both Brigham Young University and The Johns Hopkins University. He holds a PhD from The Johns Hopkins University, where he served on the senior administration for a number of years.

Allen is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has served in callings such as gospel doctrine teacher, stake institute director, priesthood quorum instructor, high councilor, bishop, stake presidency counselor, and full-time missionary. He and his wife, Carol Lynn, are the parents of four children.
