Sonja Poulter

Sonja Poulter is a choir conductor, vocal instructor, and accompanist. She sings with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. She also serves on the new hymnbook committee for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Poulter is a native of Germany. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Music Education, Musicology, and English from the University of Music and Performing Arts and the Goethe University in Frankfurt Germany. She received her Master of Music degree and Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting and Vocal Performance at the University of Utah and studied under Dr. Barlow Bradford and Prof. Kiersten Gunlogson.

She has been a conductor, accompanist, and vocal instructor at the Madeleine Choir School, Utah Valley University, and Hale Center Studios. She frequently conducts choirs for general events of the Church of Jesus Christ, including the church’s annual Music Festival. In 2019 she was appointed as director of Brigham Young University’s Women’s Chorus.

Before pursuing graduate degrees in the U.S., Poulter was the artistic director of the Kammerchor Vocalis, a group of selected young singers from Germany, Switzerland and Austria, representing the Church on a European level. The ensemble has performed throughout Europe.

In 2018, she co-founded the Amavi Chorale, a chamber ensemble of highly trained and experienced choral singers from along the Wasatch Front. She serves as conductor and artistic director. Poulter and her husband Cameron, a BYU Men’s Chorus alumnus, make their home in Draper, Utah.
