Eccles was born on August 24, 1934, in Ogden, Utah, to Spencer Stoddard Eccles and Pauline Hope Fox. He is a member of the philanthropic Eccles family and is involved with the various Eccles family foundations. He is chairman of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, president of the Eccles Family Foundation, president of the Marriner S. Eccles Foundation, trustee of both the Emma Eccles Jones Foundation and the Nora Eccles Harrison Foundation. His grandfather David Eccles was Utah’s first millionaire. The family has contributed millions to Utah State University, the University of Utah, many performing arts organizations, and other educational, medical, cultural, and civic causes throughout Utah.
 
 
David Eccles started several businesses that the family continues to be involved with. Family members have started other businesses. Spencer F. Eccles is chairman emeritus of the Intermountain Region of Wells Fargo Corporation and has been chairman and chief executive officer of First Security Corporation. He is also a director of the Union Pacific Railroad, Intermountain Health Care, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, ZCMI Corporation, the Anderson Lumber Company, Amalgamated Sugar, the Alta Ski Corporation, the National Parks Foundation, and the National Chamber of Commerce.
 
 
He has been a director of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. He was a member of the executive committee of the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee for the 2002 Olympic Games held in Salt Lake City. He was appointed mayor of the Olympic Village during the games. The International Olympic Committee honored him with its highest distinction, the Pierre de Coubertin medal.
 
 
He earned a BS degree in 1956 from the University of Utah and an MBA in 1958 from Columbia University School of Business. He married Cleone Emily Peterson and they have three daughters and one son, [[Spencer P. Eccles]].
