Steven L. Kent: Mormon Author
Steven L. Kent is a writer who not only contributes to video game journalism but also writes military science fiction novels.
Kent was born in California and raised in Hawaii. He is the son of Ronald E. Kent, a well-known woodturner. Kent served as a missionary from 1979 to 1981, serving a Spanish-speaking mission with migrant farm workers in Southern Idaho. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brigham Young University in journalism and communications, respectively. He worked at a public relations agency, but when he was laid off in 1994, he worked as a freelance journalist writing monthly video game features and reviews for the Seattle Times and expanded into USA Today, MSNBC, Japan Times, Chicago Tribune, Next Generation, and the Los Angeles Times Syndicate. He also wrote the entries on video games for Encarta and the Encyclopedia Americana. At the invitation of Senator Joseph Lieberman, Kent has spoken at the annual Report Card on Video Game Violence in Washington D.C.
In 2000, he self-published The First Quarter: A 25-Year History of Video Games. The book was later purchased and re-published as The Ultimate History of Video Games. In 2006, he devoted most of his time to writing novels. He has published the Rogue Clone series.
