From 2009 to his retirement in January 2021, he served as a senator for the state of New Mexico. He is a member of the Udall political family, which includes his father, Stewart Udall, grandfather Levi Stewart Udall, uncle Morris Udall, and cousin Mark Udall. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Udall was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998 on his third attempt to win a seat in Congress. He was reelected four times with no significant opposition, including an unopposed run in 2002.
