She earned her bachelor's degree in journalism and English with a teaching certificate from the University of Utah. She has taught junior high English and was an adjunct instructor at Salt Lake Community College. She was born on December 15, 1950, in Murray, Utah. Her parents were not members of the LDS Church, but they sent her to a local LDS congregation as a child.
