The Vienna Austria Temple was among 20 new temples announced by President Russell M. Nelson on April 4, 2021, at the 191st Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Vienna is the capital and most populous city in Austria and home to about 5,000 Latter-day Saints. This will be the Church’s first temple in Austria, considered one of Central Europe’s cultural and economic centers.

Orson Hyde, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, visited Austria in 1841 on his way to Jerusalem.[1] More than 20 years later, Elder Orson Pratt of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and William W. Riter, president of the Swiss, Italian, and German mission, arrived in Vienna to begin missionary work. However, the first missionaries to Austria were called in 1883, but due to religious intolerance, the two missionaries were forced to leave the country in June 1884. Johann Huber, a native of Haag am Hausruck, Austria, was baptized in Munich in April 1900. Martin Ganglmayer, who was visiting his own hometown of Haag am Hausruck on the way to his mission in Germany, had taught Huber the restored gospel.[2]

Austria granted official government recognition to the Church in September 1955. The first stake was organized in 1980.

No temples are currently under construction in Europe, but the Vienna temple is one of eight new houses of the Lord that President Nelson has announced. As of October 2023, twenty-two temples are operating or announced in Europe.

Location

Plans call for a multi-story temple of approximately 15,300 square feet to be built on an 0.80-acre site at Silbergasse 2, Vienna, Austria.
