The Plates of Mormon is the 13th section within the collective works of the Book of Mormon. Authored by Mormon, the term "Plates of Mormon" is sometimes used to explicitly refer to Mormon's direct contributions to the scriptural/historical record. This is in direct contrast to the term "Book of Mormon," which describes the record at large and is named after Mormon due to the extensive work he undertook to summarize the nearly one thousand years of history in his care into the text we have today. Within the Plates of Mormon, the prophet outlines how he came into possession of his responsibilities, as well as explaining the state of affairs surrounding the Nephites and Lamanites a few hundred years after the coming of Christ.
