Robert Sands was the fifth conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (from 1865 to 1869) and the first to lead the choir in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. The first performance in the Tabernacle took place in October 1867 for the dedication.

Sands was born on April 15, 1828, in Ballinascreen, Londonderry, Ireland. He was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland, where he had relocated. He also served as a missionary in Scotland.

He came to Utah Territory in 1863 and died in Salt Lake City on December 7, 1872.
