Jonathan S. Schmitt was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 2, 2022, at age 48. At the time of his call, he had been serving as an Area Authority and member of the Eleventh Quorum of the Seventy in the North America Southwest Area.

He has also served in the Church as a full-time missionary in the California Fresno Mission, elders quorum president, ward executive secretary, counselor in a stake Young Men presidency, high councilor, stake Missionary Preparation teacher, high priests group leader, bishop, counselor in a stake presidency, stake president, and president of the California San Diego Mission from 2014 to 2017.

Schmitt received a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural and resource economics from the University of Arizona in 1997. In 2000 he received a Juris Doctor from the University of Arizona. He worked as a law clerk for the Arizona Supreme Court from 2000 to 2001. In 2001, he began working as an attorney for Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP. He then worked as attorney and litigation counsel for Baker Hughes Incorporated until his call as a mission president in 2014. At the time of his call as a General Authority, he had been working as an assistant vice president of Arizona State University.

Jonathan Stephen Schmitt was born in Mesa, Arizona, on April 16, 1973. He married Alexis Swain Udall in 1995 and they are the parents of four children.
